It’s a Winged Wonderland at the National Aviary

The Aviary has decorated its habitats and hallways for the season, and that's not all.

In the heart of Pittsburgh’s Northside neighborhood, the National Aviary is embracing the season with holiday décor and seasonal festivities. Visit to see stately bald eagles, majestic snowy owls and playful penguins up close among the holiday lights.

Don’t forget to bring your camera for stunning photos with a life-sized lighted penguin family and sparkling snowflakes in Penguin Point, or to pose in a massive Santa chair surrounded by glowing Christmas Trees. Learn about multi-cultural holidays including Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, Diwali, Chinese New Year and Las Posadas. And as always, you can warm up in tropical indoor habitats with colorful birds flying freely around you, perfect for combating the winter blues.

The National Aviary is open daily from 10-5, and to make sure guests can see its “winged wonderland” at night, the Aviary will stay open until 9 p.m. for new Holiday Lights & Late Nights on December 13, 20, 26, 27 and 28. Guests who visit from 5-9 on Thursdays December 13 and 20 can enjoy seasonal café offerings from Atria’s and adult beverages (available for purchase), live holiday music, gift shop discounts and a kid zone with activities inspired by the season.

The Aviary is also bringing back its traditional Photos with Santa & a Penguin on Saturdays before Christmas from 11-1 and Penguin Camp on December 27 and 28 where kids can spend their winter break with a colony of African Penguins before heading back to school.

You can even get your holiday shopping done. Pick up a gift certificate for National Aviary admission, holiday camp with the penguins or an interactive encounter with a sloth, penguin, owl or other species. You can give the gift of an Aviary membership, or shop in the hand-curated gift shop filled with local art, ornaments, toys, cards, dishware, decorations and gifts for nature lovers. There’s something for everyone on your list.

The National Aviary will be transformed into a winged wonderland through January 6, so start a new holiday tradition, right here in Pittsburgh.
