Hit the Street: Beaver

About 15 years ago, Beaver officials buried utility lines and redid sidewalks to beautify the borough’s main street. The result is a town that today is ripe for strolling (with free parking) and with hardly an empty storefront.

Start at Castle Toys and Games [682 Third St.], which carries many green and/or educational toys and specializes in items made in the United States. The store aims to be a center for fun — tables are set up with toys ready for play and activities are held on weekends.

The ambience and music in Mario’s Woodfired Pizzeria [594 Third St., 724/774-9300] suggest the Italian countryside. Anything with the homemade red sauce in this family-owned establishment is a hit.

Snitger’s Bicycle Store [399 Third St.] invites customers to ride into the store, where antique bikes hang from the ceiling and free seasonal beers are on tap at the counter. On Sept. 7, you can join cycling enthusiasts on the third annual Beaver County Hill Challenge, starting at 9 a.m. at Snitger’s.

Make the difficult choice between 16 flavors of ice cream — some brought in weekly from the Penn State Creamery — at Witch Flavor? [588 Third St., witchflavor.com].

Consignment and retail shops are prevalent along Third Street. One good pick is Split Personality [524 Third St.].

A new spot on the strip is Soap Alchemy [486 Third St.], which sells locally handcrafted, all-natural varieties of soaps, candles and body creams, among other products, for people and pets.

While You’re There

Kretchmar’s Bakery [664 Third St.] is run by a third-generation German family. Bake Magazine named it the No. 2 best bakery in the country the last two years. Founded in 1960, Kretchmar’s is known for its toasted almond torte and Bavarian crème doughnuts.

Ride over to Bradys Run Park, a stretch of nearly 2,000 acres that includes a lake for fishing, a dog park, jogging trails and a recreation facility complete with a track, indoor tennis courts and an ice rink.
