‘Til Death Do They Part?

Locals in the running for America’s Favorite Couple made Friday the 13th a lucky day for love.

Tom Savini wasn’t the best man at Scott and Rachel Morrison’s wedding, but he was definitely the tallest.

A 2,500-square-foot mural of the special effects artist served as a backdrop for the couple’s “Friday the 13th” photoshoot last October in Lawrenceville. Painted on the side of an Almond Way home by Jeremy Raymer, Savini’s larger-than-life image is holding a hockey mask from the ‘80s slasher series he helped launch.

Superstitious folks say tying the knot on Friday the 13th is bad luck, but the bride and groom, who met at a horror-themed South Side bar called The Smiling Moose (R.I.P.) and got engaged on the 13th day of September, tossed triskaidekaphobia aside like a bouquet of black roses.

The Morrisons are in the running for America’s Favorite Couple, an online competition that lovebirds across the country have entered for a chance to win $20,000 and an advertorial in Variety magazine. Actor Jeff Goldblum, a West Homestead native, is the host.

Aside from cookie tables, I have little interest in weddings, but when I saw the Morrisons’ photos and story pop up in a private Facebook group for worldwide fans of “The Monster Squad,” I knew I had to contact my fellow fright-loving yinzers. The obscure horror-comedy was released in 1987, when I was 9, Scott was a toddler and Rachel didn’t exist. Despite the generation gaps, we have a lot in common, not the least of which is an undying love for a silly little creature feature.

Their reception was a celebration of each other, physical media and the flicks they bonded over. Held at TRYP Hotel, the party included a photobooth stocked with ghoulish props ranging from Freddy Krueger’s hat and glove to Jason Voorhees’ hockey mask and machete.

That sounds like a bloody good time to me!

A few months before their Big Day, the Morrisons went to a horror convention in Ohio to meet two stars of “The Monster Squad,” Andre Gower and Ryan Lambert. The guys autographed a VHS copy, which the couple proudly displayed on the sweetheart table at their reception.

As someone who appears in “Wolfman’s Got Nards,” Gower and Lambert’s 2019 documentary about the movie’s small, but rabid, fanbase, I think that’s the most romantic thing I’ve ever heard!

“Like horror movies, the outcasts and black sheep are always who we root for, since it’s so relatable to us,” Scott says. “They come out stronger than they started, and I feel like we’d do just that as America’s Favorite Couple, knowing that we had the support from all the other monster movie fans who didn’t exactly fit in growing up.”
