Explore Brews of the East
A new Pour Tour encourages the discovery of breweries and more throughout the Laurel Highlands.
Laurel Highlands is promoting local breweries with its new Pour Tour — a passport-based trail showcasing “our region’s rich heritage, agricultural diversity and entrepreneurial spirit,” according to the press release.
The Pour Tour was developed by the Laurel Highlands Visitors Bureau in conjunction with 31 craft beverage makers throughout the three-county region. It’s what you might get if you crossed a scavenger hunt with a bar crawl; you can take the Pour Tour passport to participating sites across Fayette, Westmoreland and Somerset counties, to breweries, wineries, distilleries, meaderies and cideries. For visiting one of the locales, you’ll get a sticker in your passport; when stickers add up, you can cash them in for prizes.
The goal is to promote local sellers — such as Four Seasons Brewing in Latrobe (pictured above) — and incentivize visitation to the region.
“The lore and legacy of distilled spirits and craft beverages run deep in Pennsylvania’s Laurel Highlands,” says Ann Nemanic, the visitors bureau executive director, in a press release. “Today’s industry has blossomed from those deep-seated roots, providing visitors with authentic experiences and tastes they won’t find in any other region.”
Laurel Highlands is an apt place for a tour of beer, spirits and everything in between; it’s where the Whiskey Rebellion took place in 1794, according to Lisa Welch, assistant manager at Tall Pines Distillery in Salisbury.
“Our Laurel Highlands has a rich heritage in the history of distilled spirits,” she says in a release. “Not only will the Pour Tour help promote awareness of this fast-growing industry, but perhaps pique interest in our region’s role in American History.”
A Laurel Highlands Pour Tour app can be downloaded to help users plan and complete the trail and stay up-to-date on sites and special events.
Passports can be ordered online at lhpourtour.com, by calling 724.238.5661, ext. 101 or at participating locations.
