The Delta Foundation of Pittsburgh — a non-profit LGBTQ organization —  announced the cancellation of its Pittsburgh Pride 2020 event due to COVID-19 restrictions.

“As Pride is something that lives with our hearts 365 days a year, we are choosing to announce the hiatus of the in-person event as nothing can cancel the Pride and spirit that the LGBTQ equality movement embodies,” Marty Healey, chair of Pittsburgh Pride 2020 and new Delta Foundation of Pittsburgh president, says.

The event, initially scheduled for July, had already been postponed.

According to a press release, the Delta Foundation plans to form a Pride planning committee made up of community members and representatives from “LGBTQ-friendly organizations.”

The Delta Foundation has faced criticism for not engaging with the LGBTQ community year-round and leaving out the transgender and non-binary people of color who historically stood up for equality, according to WESA.

Healey says Delta is “excited to re-imagine what Pittsburgh Pride 2021 is going to look like.”
