Christmas Tree Recycling: Where You Can Drop Off Your Tree
The Allegheny County Parks Department has locations at all nine of its parks starting Dec. 26.
Decorating the Christmas tree is one of the greatest joys of the season for those who celebrate, but what happens when Christmas is over and the tree is looking worse for wear?
While some may opt to repurpose it and others might toss it out with the trash, the Allegheny County Parks Department has an easy and sustainable solution.
Once again, the department is hosting its annual Christmas Tree Recycling Program. County residents can drop off Christmas trees from Sunday, Dec. 26 through Friday, Jan. 14 at all nine county parks from 8 a.m. until dusk.
You’ll have to remove all of your decor — lights, bulbs, tinsel and stands. The trees will be mulched and used in the parks. Last year, almost 3,300 trees were recycled, and the mulch they produced was used throughout the park system’s more than 12,000 acres.
Here are the places you can drop off your tree:
- Boyce Park — Soccer Fields Parking Lot
- Deer Lakes Park — Veterans Shelter Parking Lot
- Harrison Hills Park — Parking Lot at Chipmunk Drive and Cottontail Drive
- Hartwood Acres Park — Middle Road Parking Lot
- North Park — Swimming Pool Parking Lot
- Round Hill Park — Alfalfa Shelter Parking Lot
- Settlers Cabin Park — Wave Pool Parking Lot
- South Park — Wave Pool Parking Lot
- White Oak Park — Chestnut Shelter Parking Lot
For more information, check out the Allegheny County Parks Department’s website.
City residents can also recycle their trees at several Department of Public Works divisions, which will be accepting trees 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday through Saturday.
Earlier this year, more than 38 tons of trees from last Christmas were diverted away from landfills through this program, creating pine mulch that city residents could pick up and use for vegetable gardens and other beautification projects.
