Chalk it Up: Lily & Val Opens Shadyside Storefront
The charming shop features handmade chalk art, home decor items, vintage finds and more.
Once an online-only store, Lily & Val celebrated the grand opening of its brick-and-mortar flagship location Oct. 8 in Shadyside.
Located on Ellsworth Avenue, Lily & Val specializes in hand-lettered and illustrated chalk-art designs. The light and airy store — which resembles a cozy living room — also sells home décor items, vintage goods, women’s accessories and other one-of-a-kind pieces.
There also is a print bar (which includes a design menu), plus a wall of stationery and greeting cards with chalk-inspired missives for all seasons and occasions.
Lily & Val is the brainchild of owner Valerie McKeehan, who got her start in chalkboard art when she transformed an old picture frame into a “McKeehan’s Café” chalkboard for her kitchen as a newlywed.
If you think chalkboard lettering is only temporary, think again. McKeehan makes a digital print of each piece of art so it doesn’t fade or get washed away.
Since opening in 2012, Lily & Val has been featured on HGTV, Martha Stewart Weddings and The Knot Magazine. McKeehan also is the author of “The Complete Book of Chalk Lettering,” which was published in 2015.
