Blood Science Foundation – It’s About Giving from the Heart
Your donation helps to secure the blood supply, support research and provide High School scholarships.
When it comes to blood, numbers truly tell the story. In the last 10 years, blood donations in western Pennsylvania have dropped by more than half, an unprecedented decline.
Through fundraising and public education efforts, Blood Science Foundation supports the life-affirming mission of Vitalant (formerly Central Blood Bank) – to provide a safe, adequate blood supply to its hospital and health care partners so doctors can perform surgeries, treat critically injured patients and help others fight diseases.
Consider local statistics from 2018.
The hospitals Vitalant supports in western Pennsylvania required nearly 160,000 pints of blood to treat patients. Local blood donors provided about 74,000 pints of blood, less than half the amount needed. In these situations, Vitalant must import blood from other regions, costing tens of millions of dollars each year. Funds raised by Blood Science Foundation help offset the costs to purchase that missing blood.
Blood Science Foundation also funds critical research. In the last decade, we have provided $20 million to some of the area’s top universities and hospitals so that they could perform vital studies aimed at curing blood-related diseases or improving the safety of blood transfusions.
In addition, our reach and impact extend into high schools across southwestern Pennsylvania.
Each year, Blood Science Foundation provides tens of thousands of dollars in scholarship money to schools that hold blood drives on campus. In turn, those schools award the scholarship money to deserving students who seek to further their education.
