A Far From Ordinary House Tour in Wilkinsburg This Weekend
The Wilkinsburg Community Development Corporation hosts a one-of-a-kind house tour on May 7.
Expect a dose of history and a lesson in revitalization from this nontraditional home tour in Wilkinsburg this weekend.
On Saturday, May 7, the Wilkinsburg Community Development Corporation (WCDC) will host its second annual Vacant Home Tour, a self-guided walking tour that encompasses five vacant homes and one commercial building. The tour leads visitors through the rich history of Wilkinsburg and the stories of abandoned homes and aims to educate visitors on how to reframe the issue of blight in the community.
Tour goers will check in at the South Avenue United Methodist Church before departing on the tour, which lasts from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Other featured stops will include historic landmarks, and neighborhood residents will greet tour-goers at every stop to tell the forgotten histories of the properties. The WCDC will also offer informational workshops during the event on topics such as acquiring and rehabilitating vacant properties.
Since its inception in 2008, the WCDC has focused on revitalizing Wilkinsburg through residential and commercial development, leadership and cultural enrichment. After the vacant home tour, the WCDC hopes that people from within Wilkinsburg and the greater Pittsburgh area will see how it is possible to reframe the issue of blight and reclaim forgotten properties.
