Some dogs spend their days chasing tennis balls or sprinting through the yard. Pigeon? He’d much rather spend his time curled up beside you on the couch, soaking up affection and enjoying the simple comfort of companionship.

This sweet 6-year-old pup is Humane Animal Rescue of Pittsburgh’s Pet of the Month, and after more than 260 days in HARP’s care, staff and volunteers are hoping it’s finally his turn to find the loving home he deserves.

Pigeon’s story is one filled with both heartbreak and hope. He was originally adopted from HARP in 2021 and spent several happy years in a home of his own. Sadly, he returned to the shelter after his owner passed away. While losing the only family he knew has certainly been difficult, Pigeon has remained incredibly gentle, loving, and trusting through it all.

Described as a “lap dog at heart,” Pigeon is happiest when he’s close to people. He loves leisurely walks where he can stop to greet new friends, collect pets, and enjoy the attention of everyone he meets. In fact, for Pigeon, affection easily outranks treats as his favorite reward.

Though he’s currently working on a weight-loss journey and managing some related medical needs, Pigeon hasn’t let any of it slow him down emotionally. His easygoing personality and calm demeanor continue to shine, making him the kind of dog who fits naturally into a relaxed home environment.

Pigeon has also spent time in a loving foster home, where he proved just how adaptable and well-mannered he can be. His foster family reported that he settled in nicely, was wonderful to have around, and even did well when left alone after becoming comfortable in the home. Those real-world experiences help paint a picture of the loyal companion waiting beneath the shelter kennel stress.

Adult and senior pets like Pigeon are often overlooked in favor of younger animals, but they have so much love left to give. Pigeon already knows how to be someone’s best friend—he’s simply waiting for the chance to be one again.

If your ideal evening includes a cozy couch companion, quiet company, and unconditional love, Pigeon may be the perfect fit. Meet him at Humane Animal Rescue of Pittsburgh and help give this deserving dog the second chance he’s been waiting for.
