An estimated 160,000 people in Allegheny County and thousands in surrounding counties are losing their SNAP benefits because of the federal government shutdown. Thousands more federal workers in the eight-county Pittsburgh region are missing paychecks.

Nonprofit agencies and throngs of volunteers have been gearing up food distribution efforts at local food networks and stocking neighborhood pantries, cupboards and refrigerators to help.

Here are some places to turn for help:

If you need food right away:

In Allegheny County: call the United Way Resource hotline: 211 or visit www.pa211.org
