It’s Time to Roll at the Schenley Park Rink
For the first time, Pittsburgh's 50-year-old ice rink will offer public roller skating sessions all summer.
For 50 years, the Schenley Park Skating Rink at the Oval has offered ice skating in the colder months. This summer for the first time, it turns into the Schenley Park Roller Rink.
Its first roll begins Friday, May 23, at 10 a.m. Public skating sessions will run through Aug. 31.
The nonprofit PGH SK8, which was formed in 2023, has held several roller skating sessions over the last couple of years at the Schenley rink. It has been working with Pittsburgh city officials to develop more access to roller skating in neighborhoods throughout the city. It also offers skating instruction, now based at the Homewood Brushton YMCA.
“The organizers of PGH SK8 started hosting roller skate events at the rink and have worked to help us reimagine how we can utilize this facility to offer Pittsburghers an additional fun summer recreational activity in Schenley Park,” Kathryn Vargas, director of Pittsburgh CitiParks, said in a statement.
Skate rentals will be available later this summer for $3 a pair. Until then, patrons must bring their own skates. Both inline and regular roller skates are permitted.
