It begins with a sweeping view of the Allegheny River and Downtown’s Three Sister bridges. Then the new trailer quickly pivots to Dr. Michael Robinavitch (Noah Wyle) entering an ER at a modern-day Pittsburgh hospital being introduced to the interns and medical students he’ll oversee during his shift.

Welcome to “The Pitt,” a medical drama set in Pittsburgh that begins streaming on MAX in January. It tells a story of a single ER shift in 15, one-hour episodes. It’s produced by and stars Wyle, who also starred on NBC’s “ER” for 15 years. In addition to Warner Bros., the show is also produced by John Wells Productions, the company behind “ER,” “The West Wing” and other shows. Wells is a graduate of Carnegie Mellon University.

While the show — based at a fictional Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Center on the North Side — uses Allegheny General Hospital as its exterior, most of the scenes were filmed on sound stages in Burbank, California, according to Trib Live.

The drama gets its name partly from being based in the basement of the hospital. It “aims to be a realistic examination of the challenges facing health care workers in today’s America as seen through the lens of the frontline heroes working in a modern-day hospital in Pittsburgh,” according to an earlier statement.

This won’t be the only Pittsburgh-based medical drama debuting in January. “Watson” is set to premiere on Jan. 26 on CBS, and it takes place at “University Hospital of Pittsburgh” based in Oakland. It’s a twist on a modern-day Sherlock Holmes, in which the lead character, Dr. John Watson, focuses on solving medical mysteries instead of crimes after the death of his partner. That show is being filmed mostly in Vancouver, Canada.
