Change of Plans: Monroeville Convention Center Will Stay Open
Hobby Lobby had been slated to occupy the space in early summer.
The announcement that the Monroeville Convention Center would be closing was premature.
Officials with the state, Allegheny County and Monroeville said Tuesday that plans have been scrapped for a Hobby Lobby to occupy the space later this summer.
Convention Center owner Oxford Development and Hobby Lobby had “mutually agreed to pursue termination of their lease agreement,” according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. Instead, the Convention Center will be operated as a “long-term community asset” with the community or government either buying or leasing the facility.
When the closing was first announced in February, several vendors complained that they would have to search for new locations for their conventions while Monroeville officials feared a significant economic fallout to the municipality.
