If you’ve ever wanted to fly to Iceland — easily — you’ll get that chance starting in May when Pittsburgh International Airport begins offering nonstop service on Icelandair.

This will be Pittsburgh International’s second nonstop flight to Europe, following British Airways’ service to London Heathrow that began in June 2022. With the two routes, Pittsburghers will be able to fly to the other side of the Atlantic every day of the week from May through October, according to Allegheny County airport officials at a press conference Thursday.

The last time Pittsburgh had a nonstop flight to the Land of Fire and Ice was between 2017-19 when budget airline Wow Air flew the route. But that ended in January 2019 when Wow started cutting flights and destinations because of financial problems

The Icelandair flights will be a seasonal route four times a week, stretching into October. Operating on a 737-8 MAX, flights will arrive at PIT at 7:20 p.m. and depart at 8:30 p.m. on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Sundays beginning May 16, according to Blue Sky News. Passengers will arrive at Keflavík International Airport, about 30 miles outside of the nation’s capital of Reykjavik; from the airport, travelers can connect to all the European locations in Icelandair’s network.

“Icelandair is thrilled to announce our newest US gateway: Pittsburgh, Pa. Our hub in Iceland at Keflavík International Airport is a short flight from Pittsburgh International Airport with easy connections to the UK, Scandinavia and Continental Europe,” said Bogi Nils Bogason, Icelandair CEO, at the press conference.

“Pittsburgh is filled with a rich history and a vibrant culture, and home to many international businesses,” he said. “With all that Pittsburgh and Allegheny County have to offer, we know Icelandair is the perfect fit to help bring Pittsburghers to the world, and the world to the Steel City, and we look forward to welcoming them aboard.”

Icelandair also offers a stopover option for customers, where they can choose to add up to a weeklong layover in Iceland before continuing on to another destination at no additional airfare, Bogason said.

Airport officials also noted that there are business opportunities in Iceland. Pittsburgh-based aluminum giant Alcoa, for instance, has operated a facility in Iceland since 2007 that employs more than 400 people.
