A lifelong Pittsburgh Pirates fan, Jacque Skowvron remembers a game she attended back in high school. Her mom pointed at the Pirates Charities sign in the outfield and said “You’re going to run that someday.” At the time, Skowvron didn’t believe her.
As a University of Pittsburgh student, Skowvron secured an internship with the Pirates in their communication department and later went on to the National Football League’s marketing department, eventually landing a role running the NFL’s PLAY 60 campaign and programming. She attended and worked five Super Bowls before making the transition to DICK’S Sporting Goods, where she helped start the company’s public relations division and influencer marketing efforts. Highlights from her time at the company include launching a clothing line in partnership with country music star Carrie Underwood and overseeing the execution of the company’s first fashion show in New York City.
In 2021 — about a decade after that internship — the Pirates approached her about the role of Executive Director of Pirates Charities and Community Relations. It was an opportunity Skowvron couldn’t pass up. “I guess moms are always right,” she says.
Since its inception, Pirates Charities has developed experiences and programs that have made a lasting positive impact on athletes with unique abilities and countless others. Skowvron oversees the Pirates’ philanthropic efforts, community relations activities and youth baseball and softball programming.
“I’ve been lucky enough to really love every job I’ve ever had,” Skowvron says. “For me, it’s always been about weighing pros and cons and trying to make the best decision given my circumstances at the time.”
Skowvron credits her success to hard work and an strong network of mentors. She encourages women to support other women in the workplace and to refrain from tearing one another down, especially in industries where women are still a minority.
“Having strong, positive female advocates can really help you succeed in the workplace,” she says.
