Chris Maury gravitates toward “problems that are underinvested in” despite having a meaningful impact.

For Maury, those problems have taken radically different forms. After losing much of his vision to Stargardt disease, he founded Pittsburgh accessibility startup Conversant Labs, which Apple acquired in 2016. He spent seven years at Apple before returning to an earlier interest in politics and journalism. That led to InformUp, Maury’s nonprofit aimed at helping residents understand and engage with local government.

When Pittsburgh City Paper closed in 2026, Maury helped bring it back through the nonprofit LocalMatters; he then became its publisher. “The ‘local’ in LocalMatters matters a lot,” says Maury. City Paper, he adds, can bring attention to Pittsburgh “however weird, however wonderful,” while holding local power accountable.

For all his accomplishments, what Maury is proudest of is more personal: “Being able to lead a balanced life with my family and friends in the community of Pittsburgh, as well as making contributions to that same community.”
