2022 40 Under 40 Honoree: Tanisha Long

“I can’t imagine seeing other people suffering and knowing I have things that can lessen [it] and not doing that. I want others to adopt that ideology — don’t stay silent when you see suffering.”

TANISHA LONG (33)
Community Organizer, Abolitionist Law Center

Tanisha Long wakes up every day knowing that she’ll be contributing to lessening the struggle and inequity that people face in Allegheny County.

The community organizer for the Abolitionist Law Center, Long drives initiatives for humane treatment in the prison system and organized the Black Lives Matter Pittsburgh and Southwest PA organization. The group has almost 8,000 members and has raised more than $18,000 to provide children’s books by authors of color and also organizes backpack drives, peaceful sit-ins, rallies, food drives, rent relief funds and more.

“The best things I’ve done have happened in the last three years, not the last three decades,” Long says. “It doesn’t matter when you start; it matters when you choose not to give up.”

After growing up in an area where racism was normalized, Long says that she learned that just because she was victimized didn’t mean she had to be a victim. “I can’t imagine seeing other people suffering and knowing I have things that can lessen [it] and not doing that,” she says. “I want others to adopt that ideology — don’t stay silent when you see suffering.”
