As a physician, Natalie Gentile believes her work extends beyond the walls of the doctor’s office. She created Direct Care Physicians of Pittsburgh, a model where patients get unlimited, personalized access to their doctor through texts, phone calls and appointments.

She also visits farmers markets to host blood pressure checks, leads a program called Walk with a Doc, hosts flu shot clinics and shares health tips on social media.

“As a family doctor, the most rewarding and important thing we can do is community-based medicine, and community-based medicine means getting out of the doctor’s office and being ingrained in the community,” she says. “I try to be very active as a pillar in the community because so often I think that people are separated from and distrustful of the medical community because there’s so many barriers between us.”
