Disaster Program Manager, American Red Cross

Carlos Carmona was keeping an eye on the emerging coronavirus pandemic when a job opening popped up: Disaster program manager at the Pittsburgh chapter of the American Red Cross.

Unhappy at his corporate job, he leapt at the opportunity to help, taking the position two weeks before the COVID-19 lockdown. He quickly mobilized 300 volunteers to pack and distribute 900,000 meals through partnerships to homebound seniors and under-privileged children and families. He also built a coalition of volunteer groups that would later help vaccinate 40,000 people — on top of assisting another 1,400 people in Allegheny County with disaster relief.

For years, the father of two also has helped veterans in the Pittsburgh area. He credits his experience as an Army combat engineer, as well as inspiration from his military veteran parents, for his spirit of giving. “It’s something that’s always been in my DNA,” he says.

“I’ve been blessed with a lot of opportunity to make an impact on my community. I’m really happy I had the foresight to capitalize on it.”
