2020 40 Under 40 Honoree: Devon L. Taliaferro
“I did what I did for the kids. It’s an opportunity to listen to them and to hear their voices.”
The boxes of homegrown flowers and produce began showing up on Devon Taliaferro’s doorstep just after Gov. Wolf instituted the statewide lockdown in March.
“We want to support you while you support us,” the accompanying notes read.
They were from the families who reside in Pittsburgh Public’s District 2, which Taliaferro represents on the school board.
“It’s a job I take very seriously because it doesn’t just impact me; it’s families and students and teachers and staff and community,” she says. “They need people on this board who are genuine and honest and who want to help them sort out their problems.”
Taliaferro, who currently serves as the community engagement coordinator for The Midwife Center, decided to run for the school board after working with students at Amachi Pittsburgh and Big Brothers Big Sisters. She realized they needed someone to advocate for them. “There was no thought of political gain or climbing to the next level,” she says. “I did what I did for the kids. It’s an opportunity to listen to them and to hear their voices.”
