2017 Home of the Year: Best Renovated Bathroom

The Bellicini family transformed their master bathroom from dark and cramped to glam and functional.

The Bellicini family’s master bathroom in their Mount Washington home was small on space and short on style. To allow it to shine like the rest of the condo, designer Debra Pacoe and contractor Brad Roth focused on functionality and clean lines. Their efforts resulted in a Best Renovated Bathroom nod from Pittsburgh Magazine’s panel of judges.

One of the challenges was removing the bathroom’s curved exterior wall as well as the curved glass-block shower wall. Prior to renovations, the space was cramped, due to a tiny sink wedged next to a storage shelf and small closet.

“That was not ideal,” Jill Bellicini says with a laugh. “I was on my toes throwing water at my face. It wasn’t easy.”

Replacing the setup with a double-sink vanity with large drawers and bottom shelf created more space, while a second small vanity provides additional storage. Contemporary white cabinets, porcelain flooring and shower tile and Carrara countertops also open up the space. White walls and a large electric vanity mirror complete the effect.

Creative touches add interest, such as the Watermark faucets with flat spouts featuring glass accents on the handles and the pointillism-like wallpaper in the privacy suite.

“This renovation is quite the transformation,” says judge Jack Alan Bialosky Jr. “The designer took a dark and chopped-up bath and created a light-filled, serene and highly functional space. I particularly appreciate the softness of the lighting and the sense that everything is just in the right place.”
