When and Where to Dump Your Junk (including old TVs)
A state environmental agency wants to help you recycle your hard-to-dispose-of household clutter.

You know you aren’t supposed to put things like batteries, unused medications or old cell phones in the trash. That means you’re doomed to let them pile up in your garage for all eternity, right?
Not necessarily –– the Pennsylvania Resources Council is ready to help. The PRC is hosting a series of collection events for unwanted household materials that are difficult to recycle. Beginning May 5 at the North Park swimming pool parking lot, you can drop off paint, household chemicals, pesticides and other items for a $3 per gallon fee.
The full household chemical collection schedule includes:
- May 5 (North Park)
- May 19 (Concurrent Technologies Corporation ETF Facility, Johnstown, Cambria County)
- June 23 (Fairgrounds, Fayette County)
- July 21 (Wild Things Park, Washington County)
- August 18 (Boyce Park)
- September 22 (South Park)
- October 13 (Bradys Run Park, Beaver County)
There also are five dates this year when you can drop off e-waste, notoriously the toughest to recycle items including televisions, computer monitors, fluorescent tubes, tires and more. These items include small drop-off fees depending on the size of the items.
2018 hard-to-recycle collection schedule:
- May 12 (Galleria at Pittsburgh Mills, Frazer Township, Allegheny County)
- June 16 (Bethel Park High School, Allegheny County)
- June 30 (Quaker Valley High School, Leetsdale, Allegheny County)
- August 25 (Century III Mall, West Mifflin, Allegheny County)
- October 6 (Settlers Cabin Park, Allegheny County)
Finally, the PRC also is partnering with the Drug Enforcement Agency on April 28 for Drug Take Back Day. Many municipal buildings and police departments in the western Pennsylvania region will be collecting and disposing of unwanted prescription drugs at no cost.
