Kelli and Adam celebrated their big day with a self-designed newspaper — complete with crosswords and trivia.
For Kelli Haselhoff and Adam Cline, their wedding day meant more than celebrating their commitment to each other. The couple called their October 2023 wedding, held at St. Peter Catholic Church on the North Side with a reception at the Renaissance Hotel, “a celebration of family,” centering their love of family throughout their special day.
Kelli hails from a Pittsburgh family, while Cline was born and raised in West Virginia. They wanted their union to embody the blending of their backgrounds — city and country — in a way that honored every person they loved.
To do so, Kelli and Adam created a personalized newspaper for their guests, which both memorialized the big day and gave their loved ones a look into their relationship.
Designed entirely in Canva, the newspaper included details about the couple’s love story — how they met (working for a pipeline company) and the progression of their relationship leading up to their engagement. The couple also made sure to include special details about each of the members of their wedding party, including their nieces and nephews who were ages 1 through 7.
Beyond recognizing their loved ones, the couple also felt it was important to introduce the Steel City to those who were unfamiliar.
“We’re both a little nerdy — we’re both engineers — so we included a crossword puzzle just to kind of get people talking,” says Kelli.
Clues in the puzzle revealed fun facts such as how the lights atop the Grant Tower Downtown flash to spell Pittsburgh in Morse code and how the neon lights atop the Gulf Tower signal weather conditions in the area.
“We like being challenged and doing crafts or puzzles ourselves, so [we] included that to tell a little bit about ourselves and the things that were important to us,” Kelli says.
Beyond the newspaper memento, the newlyweds put heartfelt touches into small details throughout the day. Kelli surprised her mother by taking a few pictures before the ceremony in the dress she wore to marry Kelli’s father in 1982.
The bride also made corsages and boutonnieres out of long-lasting Sola Wood Flowers for special loved ones she wanted to recognize like her godparents.
“They may not have been directly in my family … but they’re special, so we [made them] special corsages,” Kelli says.
Making sure to include West Virginia traditions as well, the couple also offered pepperoni rolls in the midst of their Pittsburgh cookie table.
