It started as an offhand comment.

Before her wedding to Shane Cali on Oct. 19, Bethany Nold mentioned to her bridesmaids that it would be amazing if the pierogies that race around the field at Pirates games would show up at her wedding; Shane and Bethany love going to games together.

While getting ready the morning of, bridesmaid Addison Albert pulled out a large box with four costumes inside: Jalapeño Hannah, Potato Pete, Cheese Chester and Oliver Onion, as a surprise for Bethany.

“I was so pumped,” Bethany says. “Not only was I so excited, but I knew everyone else would be.”

She kept the costumes a secret from her guests but she couldn’t resist telling her husband while they were taking photos after the ceremony.

“He was equally as excited,” she says.

But what she didn’t know was that her bridesmaids planned to “race” around the reception upon their entrance at Hotel Monaco.

Albert, a reporter for WTOV9 in Steubenville, posted the video to TikTok with Wiz Khalifa’s “Black and Yellow” playing in the background. Many commenters called it “the most Pittsburgh thing ever.” One commenter said: “As a Yinzer. I know the Pierogis raced to the cookie table.”

“When the bride loves Everything Pittsburgh…” it was captioned.

“I couldn’t believe how much love and support and excitement everyone else had who wasn’t even there,” Bethany says. “Everyone knows the pierogies.”

Bethany and Shane also had custom NFL jerseys with their new last name, made by their best man and matron of honor, and a custom Terrible “Wedding” Towel.

Many couples enjoy bringing unique Pittsburgh elements into their weddings. And even those without connections to Pittsburgh can get in on the black-and-gold love, like this group who had a special affection for Heinz ketchup.
