Trend Alert – What to Watch for From High Point Market 2017

As always High Point Market, the furniture industry’s largest trade show, was full of new and interesting trends that made a splash across the entire show. Scouting the latest furniture designs and products is never dull, and usually comes with some surprises. And the Fall 2017 market did not disappoint, packed with inspiration and excitement for the upcoming season.

Colorless design was the most prominent trend, with rooms filled with neutral tones giving off a clean, fresh feel. Bernhardt Furniture was one showroom that dug deep into this concept. High-end art pulled together neutral rooms and made the spaces feel super chic and well-thought-out. Another aspect to love in this showroom was the use of super dark grey accent walls. Dark grey walls make the neutral furniture and décor pop, bringing in an element of drama. Bernhardt always executes the trends of the season with elegance and edge, making them a go-to every year.

The next big trend was a revival of 70s style. Mod is certainly making a comeback, in a big way. With touches of retro glam and boho chic, 70s style certainly makes a statement. A showroom that displayed this trend well was Precedent. Bold colors, such as pops of bright red and mustard yellow, were well-represented throughout the market. The seventies were all about bold design and clashes of pattern and color. In terms of furniture style, chairs and sofas were curved and less rigid. It is always fun watching the old become new again and Precedent displayed this trend revival perfectly. If this trend holds true, you’ll start to see this showing up in living rooms across the country soon.

There were also a few major accessory and accent trends that made their way across the entire market, and the biggest was faux fur. Faux fur was in every major showroom in a variety of colors. A great faux throw can absolutely work in almost any space and are available in so many shapes, sizes and colors. They nicely tie into any design style, which is what will make them a go-to for interior designers and fashionistas alike.

Woven textures, such as rope and sisal, were also big this October. These were seen on furniture and accessories. Woven textures are very neutral and can help diversify a room by adding a unique layer. And when it comes to finishes, silver and gold were being used together – which is fabulous because they complement each other well.
Lastly, many showrooms were showing a galley style display for art and portraits. This is a clustering of various prints in one area. This approach has an eclectic look, while allowing you to showcase various styles of art in one setting giving a curated feel.

Overall the October 2017 High Point Market was a great success with lots of new inspiring ideas. Watch for these to show up in homes across Pittsburgh soon!
