Even the Bridges Will Illuminate for Light Up Night This Year

Light Up Night 2023 will be brighter than ever as the Downtown bridges will light up and “American Idol” winner Phillip Phillips will headline the entertainment.

“American Idol” winner Phillip Phillips will headline this year’s Light Up Night celebration Downtown, and many returning entertainers and traditions will help to usher in the holiday season.

The Pittsburgh Downtown Partnership announced Wednesday that the 62nd annual Highmark Light Up Night, set for Saturday, Nov. 18, will include a performance by Phillips at the Xfinity Riverside Stage as well as a pop-up cocktail and beer garden, the illumination of the three Sister Bridges over the Allegheny River for the first time, and, of course, numerous fireworks displays.

The Peoples Gas Holiday Market, now in its 11th year, will open at 11 a.m. Saturday in Market Square. The first tree lighting will occur at 5 p.m. at the City-County Building complete with Zambelli fireworks. The Highmark Christmas Tree Lighting with fireworks will take place at 7 p.m., and the fireworks finale will begin at 9:30 p.m.

Performances on the Xfinity Riverside Stage at Ft. Duquesne Boulevard and Sixth Street include Orange Music featuring Isaiah Small from 4:30-6 p.m., Soulful Femme from 6:30-7:45 p.m. and Phillips beginning at 8:30 p.m. The bridge lighting will take place from 8-8:20 p.m.

At the Highmark Main Stage at Stanwix Street and Penn Avenue, SING SING SING! will perform at 3 p.m. and 4:15 p.m., and Joe Grushecky and The Houserockers will take the stage at 6 p.m. then again at 7:20 p.m. Miss Freddye’s Blues Band will cap off the night with a performance from 8:15-9:20 p.m.

The pop-up cocktail and beer garden will be open from 2-9:30 p.m. near the Cultural District Stage with adult beverages from Brew Gentlemen and local restaurants.

The Pirates’ Mini-Fest for families will return from 3-9:30 p.m. at Stanwix Street and Ft. Duquesne Boulevard with photo ops with the Pirates Parrot and the pierogies as well as face-painting and balloon artist stations.

Other returning favorites are the 21st annual gingerbread house display and competition in the lobby of the City-County Building, ice skating at the UPMC Rink at PPG Place from 11 a.m. to midnight around the 66-foot-tall holiday tree and the Spirit of Giving Around the World life-sized Santas on display in the windows of Two PPG Place along Fourth Avenue.
