This summer, blue suits and tuxedos are all the rage. Navy-, cobalt- and sapphire-clad grooms can gives their wedding days a fresh and different look.
Victoria Deardorff, owner of Pittsburgh wedding blog Burgh Brides, says she’s noticed the trend, which she says provides a “modern twist” on the classic suits and tuxes we’re accustomed to seeing.
Deardorff notes her sister-in-law’s recent shock at how little there was to choose from when she went shopping for her future husband, whereas brides are able to choose between different shades of white, cream and blush, as well as millions of dress styles, textures, materials, accessories, etc.
“Having another option allows men to infuse their personalities their wedding day,” Deardorff says.

Who says black and blue don’t go together? On Sept. 30, Patrick Baker stood at the end of the aisle at Our Lady of the Angels Parish, waiting for his new wife in a blue ensemble with black details. Inspired by Pittsburgh Penguins defenseman Kris Letang, Patrick had his tuxedo custom-made. His bowtie, lapels, buttons and pockets contrasted against his cobalt jacket. Patrick’s groomsmen wore similar attire, sans the black elements, creating a complementary wave against Monica’s neutral bridesmaids’ dresses.

Some grooms use the choice of color to stand out against their groomsmen. Grooms Ryan Koch and Michael Audey chose to match each other for their Nov. 4 wedding, but they differed from their groomsmen, garbed in gray apparel. Ryan originally preferred the classic black tux while Michael preferred a colored suit, but after having bowties custom-made by Pittsburgh company Knotzland, Ryan “never looked back at the black.” The golden ties with brown details and blue backing sold both grooms on being dressed in blue. Brown shoes completed the looks, making them a perfect match.

The brown-and-blue getup is a trend in itself. Joseph Eperjesi, who married Victoria Nickman on Nov. 11, paired his suit with a brown belt and shoes, creating a very modern vibe about him on his wedding day. Joseph sported a cool blue suit; so cool, it almost looked gray in some light, giving him a lot of versatility on his wedding day.

Eric Fitchwell certainly had some wedding day blues, as he donned a midnight blue suit paired with a sky-colored tie. On his Sept. 9 wedding to Morgan Scott, Eric wore blue down to his socks alongside his groomsmen. With the bridesmaids dressed in a light, barely lavender, the wedding party melded beautifully as a cool-toned group. The choice to have neutral white flowers completed the cool and classy vibe.
