Watch: The Terrible Towel Makes Its Way to Ireland
Max Starks shows a new audience the Pittsburgh tradition, which was first started by Myron Cope in 1975.
The Pittsburgh Steelers and Minnesota Vikings will go head-to-head Sunday, but they’re playing in neither Pittsburgh nor Minnesota.
Instead, the teams will make history as they play the first-ever NFL regular season game in Ireland.
That means there’s a new audience to teach some Pittsburgh traditions. Enter: Max Starks.

Starks, the former offensive tackle for the Steelers, taught a young group of kids how to twirl the Terrible Towel. He even extended the invitation to some Browns fans.
This is part of the “Terrible Towel Tour,” where a group from the Steelers is visiting various cities across Ireland to learn about Irish culture — and share some of Pittsburgh’s.
According to the Steelers website, “The main reason for the tour is to visit the different areas of Ireland, something late Steelers Chairman Dan Rooney Sr. did while he was the United States Ambassador to Ireland and visited every county.”
Sunday’s game can be watched on the NFL Network (WTAE-TV in Pittsburgh). Game coverage begins Sunday at 9:30 a.m. ET.
