Many people are familiar with the brick-and-glass Pittsburgh Creative and Performing Arts School, which sits smack dab in the middle of Downtown’s Cultural District and overlooks the Allegheny River.

What many people may not be as familiar with is the fact that two luxury penthouses sit atop the school — and one of them just went on the market.

Priced at $1.65 million, the 2,900-square-foot, two-story penthouse at 121 Ninth St. was listed for sale Friday by Piatt Sotheby’s International Realty.
 

According to the real estate company’s website, the unit was designed in 2006 by supporters of the arts community who went on a worldwide search for the most unusual and one-of-a-kind materials to showcase in the open space.

Today, the two-bedroom condo is filled with original artwork, including — perhaps most strikingly — a centrally located, wrought-iron staircase that leads from the first to the second level.
 

Custom-made by Peter Michael Lambert of Red Star Ironworks, the piece originally was part of the Mattress Factory's international exhibit "Gestures.” It later was reworked and expanded to become the home’s floating staircase, according to Piatt Sotheby’s International Realty.
 

Upstairs, the grandiose master bath, which features an open, multi-person shower, is enhanced with custom waterproof murals by Thommy Conroy, entitled “Leda and the Swan.”
 

The condo is chock-full of other amenities, including a private elevator, three parking spaces in a private underground garage, Brazilian marble counters and top-of-the-line kitchen appliances.
 

Then there’s the panoramic view from the home's floor-to-ceiling windows and spacious rooftop decks — which take in the Allegheny River down to the Point, parts of Downtown, PNC Park and the North Shore — and all but scream PITTSBURGH!
 

The stunning view is one that will never change, unless the new owner wants to alter it. According to Piatt Sotheby’s International Realty, the airspace above the lower rooftops are built into the deed, which means the view will never be obstructed.
