Researchers and Pittsburgh Dad Agree – The ‘Man Flu’ is Real

There is now science to challenge the popular notion that men are wimps when sidelined by a cold.

While the Pittsburgh Dad's parody of the “man flu” is over the top, there is new research indicating he might be on to something.

The BMJ medical journal reports a Canadian researcher has concluded the "man flu" –– described as “a cold or similar minor ailment as experienced by a man who is regarded as exaggerating the severity of the symptoms” –– is real. Among the findings: when it comes to many respiratory diseases, a man is more susceptible to complications than a woman and a man’s immune system may be naturally weaker, which could be a side effect of testosterone.

Dr. Brian Lamb of West Penn Medical Associates was not involved in the research but welcomes the news.

“It’s kind of nice to think maybe it isn’t always just overreaction and a guy taking it a little too seriously how bad they feel,” he tells KDKA.

This is far from the last word on the “man flu.” The Canadian author admits “much better quality research” is needed, but he believes he’s on to something.

Speaking as a man, Dr. Lamb concurs. “It’s nice to be able to say finally I have a little scientific proof as to why I need to lay on the couch and why I don’t feel good,” he says.
