At Humane Animal Rescue of Pittsburgh (HARP), every animal has a story, but some stay with you a little longer. Chopper, a 10-year-old gentle giant, is one of those unforgettable souls. After spending more than 200 days in HARP’s care, he’s finally ready to find the forever home he’s been patiently waiting for.

Chopper arrived at the shelter in early summer 2025 in need of medical care, and since then, HARP’s dedicated veterinary team has helped him every step of the way. That time has allowed staff and volunteers to truly get to know him, and to fall completely in love. Described as sweet, calm, and endlessly affectionate, Chopper is the kind of dog who forms instant bonds with everyone he meets.

Now in his golden years, Chopper prefers the simple things in life: a soft place to rest, a patch of sunshine, and the company of his favorite people. He’s not one for long hikes or high-energy play—he’d much rather lounge by your side and soak up affection. Despite his age, he still enjoys getting out and about, as shown during a recent adventure through HARP’s Barks & Rec program.

During his field trip, Chopper took a car ride to Bakery Square and made a stop at Starbucks, where he calmly greeted new friends and charmed everyone he encountered. He especially enjoyed taking in the sights and even showed a little curiosity about heading inside for more! These outings are part of HARP’s Barks & Rec program, which gives adoptable dogs a chance to experience life beyond the shelter, helping reduce stress and providing valuable insight into how they might adjust in a home environment.

Chopper may be considered a senior, but he still has so much love to give. He has lived successfully with cats and may do well with other low-energy dogs following a meet and greet. Like many older pets, he does have some manageable medical needs, including deafness and osteoarthritis, but HARP’s team is committed to supporting adopters every step of the way.

For the right person or family, Chopper won’t just be a pet—he’ll be a loyal companion, a steady presence, and a reminder that love only grows stronger with time. After more than 200 days, he’s more than ready for his second chance.

If you’re looking for a devoted friend to share quiet moments and unconditional love, Chopper might just be your perfect match.
