How to Get Your Limited-Edition Pittsburgh Penguins Library Card
The Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh will unveil a special design at this Sunday’s Summer Reading Extravaganza.
Until now, there was no way to show your love for the Pittsburgh Penguins while, say, checking out a copy of Toni Morrison’s “Beloved.”
The Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh is ready to change that.
At this Sunday’s Summer Reading Extravaganza, the Library will unveil a new, limited-edition library card created with the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation. The card, which features affable team mascot Iceburgh, is only the second limited-edition library card in the organization’s history. The first was a set of four designs by local artists to commemorate the Library’s 125th anniversary in 2021.
The unveiling, which will be handled by a group including Library President Andrew Medlar, County Executive Sara Innamorato and Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation Executive Director Yvonne Maher, will take place at 2:15 p.m. this Sunday at the Library’s main branch in Oakland. It’s part of an all-ages celebration that will also feature breakdancing and circus-arts performances, skating instruction from Steel City Roller Derby, the Taylor Allderdice Marching Band and much more.
The event is free — as are the cards, while supplies last. Library members at the Oakland branch will be able to sign up for their Penguins card on the spot after the unveiling; a limited supply will be available at other branches starting Monday.
As for what to check out with your new card: The Library system has several copies of the autobiography of Penguins favorite Phil Bourque. Take in some locker-room tales.
