(GALLERY) CRAWL BEFORE YOU CAN RUN THIS FRIDAY IN THE CULTURAL DISTRICT
Whether you’re walking, running, driving or scooter-ing on that handle-less Segway thing that nearly broke the Internet, traverse at your leisure from venue to venue during the September Gallery Crawl presented by the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust. Gallery Crawl may be the best way to experience as much of the Pittsburgh art scene in one fabulous evening as possible. At each quarterly showcase, crawlers get a closer look at interactive and often international art events happening in Pittsburgh’s flourishing cultural district.
The best thing about the crawl? It’s free. Second best thing about the crawl? It’s got it all. Live music, dance, film screenings, improv comedy, a living board game, yoga classes — the whole shebang. And it works however you want it to work: Come and go as you please. Check the list of events for info on the activities you want to hit up; most are continuous and repeat throughout the evening. “Crawl After Dark” events keep the fun rolling after hours, but keep an eye out; some include a minimal fee.

THRIVAL FEST INNOVATES WITH AN UNCONVENTIONAL MUSIC LINEUP
Many music festivals — particularly among the particularly hip, particularly cutting-edge set — can be somewhat unimaginative in setting the lineup. With a few exceptions, concertgoers know where to go for the jam bands, where to go for the DJs and where to go for the hipster-cool trendsetters. The third annual Thrival Innovation + Music Festival, however, stands in sharp contrast to that model. Sure, there are plenty of acts too cool for you to have even heard of yet, but there also are early-oughts hitmakers, ’90s hip-hop legends and modern rap titans. Take a look at the fest’s headliners in this week’s edition of After Dark!
SQUIRREL HILL NIGHT MARKET IS A GREAT REASON TO BROWSE
Speaking of outdoor activities: Who says that autumn is the time to return to the nest? Put on a jacket and find great outdoor activities, including Squirrel Hill’s second Night Market, scheduled for this Saturday evening and presented by NextGen:Pgh. Murray Avenue will close to traffic between Forbes Avenue and Bartlett Street, as the heart of the always-charming neighborhood is given over to vendors, live entertainment and more. Grab some grub from food trucks such as Nakama, Berlin Street Food, Miss Meatball and Square Cafe (among many others) as you check out the wares fromi made it! market and plenty of other vendors — and stick around for a pop-up Fuse@PSOperformance. IN THEATERS: There will always be movies meant for 30-somethings to take their parents to see, and “The Intern,” starring Robert De Niro as a senior-citizen intern to tech mogul Anne Hathaway, is just such a film. If you don’t feel like a movie date with the folks, you can take your kids to see the silly-spooky sequel “Hotel Transylvania 2” or take yourself to see the gay-rights drama “Stonewall.” Or — perhaps most likely — you can look forward to next Friday, when more-alluring dramas “The Martian” and “Sicario” arrive on local screens. — S.C.
