Here’s Santa and Mrs. Claus, here’s a Sugar Plum Fairy, here’s Hermey the Elf, and here’s … David Bowie? The Phantom of the Opera? Dean Martin?

OK, that last one isn’t so surprising — this is his hometown, after all. With more than 200 life-size nutcrackers on display, the Steubenville Nutcracker Village goes far beyond holiday icons, with images of local notables, popular characters and original inventions (look for “Snowy the Square Snowman”).

The brainchild of local businessmen Jerry Barilla and Mark Nelson, more nutcrackers have been added each year since the tradition’s 2015 debut. Every one of the 6-foot figures was carved by Brodie Stutzman and painted by Therese Fedoryka, local artisans with a flair for yuletide fun. You’ll spend a few hours walking around town to find each and every creation (pick up a map at Drosselmeyer’s Nutcracker Shoppe), and there are more seasonal celebrations on tap for you to expand your trip; check the schedule for hay rides, stroll through the picturesque Christmas village and get some shopping done at pop-up markets.

Feeling cold? Tuck into a bit of the mulled wine for sale — or warm up in Leonardo’s Coffeehouse with the “You’ll Shoot Your Chai Out” Latte.
