With the ceremony just hours away, several watch parties and live screenings of the nuptials have already sold out. But we found a few more places in Pittsburgh still taking guests whose invitations got lost in the mail.
Prince William and Kate Middleton delighted Brits and Americans alike when they tied the knot seven years ago in Westminster Abbey. Everything from the bride’s satin-and-lace dress to the abundance of union flags and fancy wedding hats enchanted people around the globe. Now, William’s younger brother Prince Harry is getting hitched this Saturday to Meghan Markle, an American actress. Tickets sold out fast for the Carnegie Science Center’s live screening of the union at the Rangos Giant Cinema, and Burgh Brides and Jessica Garda Events’ watch party at the Mansions on Fifth is already filled to capacity. Here are some of the best places in the ‘Burgh that still have seats available for those interested in watching the royal wedding from across the pond.
Harris Grill’s Royal Wedding Watch Party
You’ll have several different screens to choose from to watch Harry and Meghan say their vows at this venue. The Grill in Shadyside will be serving mimosas, tea, cucumber sandwiches and pastries at its live watch party. The event starts at 6:30 a.m. and includes a British phone booth photo op. Tickets cost $25 — walk-ins are welcome but attendees are encouraged to register early here.
The Friends of the Monroeville Library’s Royal Wedding Tea Fundraiser
For $20 you can sleep in a bit before watching the royal wedding while sipping tea and enjoying brunch. The Friends of the Library will be hosting a replay of the wedding at the Monroeville Library at 10 a.m. Saturday, followed by a cake decorating contest with prizes at noon. Entry into the cake contest costs $5 and participants must bring their own one-layer cakes and frosting before seeing who can create the best wedding-themed design. Tickets and entry fees can be paid at the library. Proceeds benefit The Friends of the Library.
Britsburgh Society’s “A Right Royal Wedding Party”
Watch a British and American tie the knot at an event hosted by Pittsburgh’s primary British-American nonprofit. A recording of the wedding will be played at the party, which lasts from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Sewickley Heights History Center. The preferred but not required dress code for the party is “as if you were going to the royal wedding.” Guests may bring their own alcoholic beverages to toast the happy couple, and tea will be served “in proper cups” alongside a buffet lunch. Games and crafts for children will be present. Registration for the event, which costs $30, closes Friday at noon.
Millvale Community Library and Tupelo Honey Teas’ Royal Wedding Viewing
Attendees will be treated to unlimited tea and scones to enjoy while watching what will be one of the most lavish weddings in history. Doors open at Tupelo Honey Tea’s Cafe in Millvale at 6:30 a.m. in preparation for the live broadcast at 7 a.m. Tickets cost $15. Guests may dress as they wish and will be able to participate in games for prizes.
Fathom Events and Britbox Screening
The royal wedding is being featured in select cinemas in the U.S. for the first time ever, and there’s a $10 showing at the Cinemark Theater in Robinson Township starting at 10 a.m. Saturday. Sit back with some popcorn and enjoy the royal nuptials commercial-free.
Friendship Perk and Brew’s Live Screening
Grab some tea instead of (or with!) your coffee on Saturday morning at this event. This coffeehouse in Bloomfield is opening a bit earlier than usual at 6:30 a.m to stream Meghan and Harry’s union live on a large projector screen. Breakfast will be served, and scones, crumpets and other treats will be available.
At Your Place with Snacks
It’s understandable if you want to stay at home Saturday morning to watch the royal wedding — regardless if it’s the 7 a.m. live broadcast or a later replay. Relax on your own or invite a few friends over to enjoy some of the royal wedding themed treats local bakeries are producing for the occasion. Spork, located in Garfield, will be serving its own version of the royal couple’s lemon-elderflower cake throughout May 19. Oakmont Bakery is also making their own mini versions of the cake along with other British treats such as royal elderberry scones.
