Lady Gaga Sings ‘Won’t You Be My Neighbor?’
The updated version of the iconic Mister Rogers tune will debut in a Superbowl ad.
Is there anyone who doesn’t know the words to “Won’t You Be My Neighbor?”
In the iconic song, Pittsburgher Fred Rogers gently asks Mister Rogers viewers to be his neighbor, singing he has always wanted a neighbor just like you. The tune is widely noted to be about care, connection and belonging.
The welcoming lyrics clearly resonated with Lady Gaga, who is taking on the beloved theme song for a Redfin ad set to air during Super Bowl LX on Sunday, Feb. 8.
“You know, when I think about watching the neighbor, I just think about my earliest memory for the kid watching Mr. Rogers, and I think about how much he loves people, especially kids at home,” Gaga says in a behind-the-scenes look at the making of the commercial at Shangri-La Studios in California.
According to a press release from Rocket and Redfin, part of Rocket Companies, the spot is part of a new campaign centered on home, community and connection.
In the teaser for the Super Bowl ad, which has been viewed more than a million times on Youtube since it was posted on Jan. 27, the Grammy winner is seen trying to capture the heartfelt emotions that resonate throughout the song.
“I need to figure out if I’m gonna take it up, or if I’m gonna sing it like the original,” she says at one point.
Later, a clearly emotional Gaga reflects on what covering the song means to her.
“Mr. Rogers was so clearly someone that stood for something, and it is powerful to think of what he would say right now, and it’s kind of a special song to revisit at this time,” she says.
