The Pitt” has been praised for being the most realistic medical drama on television. And members of the Television Academy think it’s a pretty good show, too.

The hit show on HBO Max took three of the top Emmy Awards on Sunday. It won best drama, and its star and co-executive producer Noah Wyle won best actor in a drama. His co-star, Katherine LaNasa, who plays head nurse Dana Evans in the emergency department, won best supporting actress. The show was nominated for 13 Emmys.

“What a dream this has been,” Wyle said when accepting his first-ever Emmy for his role as Dr. Michael “Robby” Robinavitch.

Producers for the show — set in Pittsburgh and partially filmed at Allegheny General Hospital on the North Side — are expected back in Pittsburgh this week for filming on Season 2. It put out a call for paid extras a few weeks ago and was deluged with responses. They plan to be on site Sept. 17-19.

The second season will return on Jan. 8. In the 15-episode show, each episode covers one hour of a 15-hour shift in an emergency department. Season 2 will take place over a Fourth of July weekend.

Wyle’s goal in the show was to create a realistic drama of an emergency department, focused on the daily struggles and challenges facing the staff. In a video presentation in front of Allegheny General emergency workers in January, he told them that when he was home during the pandemic, he was getting mail from front-line health workers thanking him for inspiring them to go into emergency medicine from his earlier role as a doctor in the long-running NBC series, “ER.” He contacted John Wells, the former executive producer he worked with on “ER”  (an alumnus of Carnegie Mellon University) and others to develop the new concept.

During his acceptance speech on Sunday, Wyle paid tribute to real hospital workers. “To anybody who is going on shift tonight or coming off shift tonight, thank you for being in that job. This is for you.”

The show was hosted by comedian Nate Bargatze, who will be in Pittsburgh to appear at PPG Place Arena on July 31, 2026.
