Drink and Get Inked at the Carnegie Science Center

The upcoming 21+ night will teach you about the science of body art.

What makes a tattoo stay forever? How is makeup created? How exactly does the body heal around a piercing?

To find out the answers to these questions, you could get lost down a Google search rabbit hole. Or, if you’re feeling like having some fun in the process, you could go to the Carnegie Science Center. Its next 21+ Science After Dark event covers the science of body modification, including makeup, piercings. tattoos and more.

Learn makeup techniques from the artists at Beat By Nesh — even have some makeup put on (free with admission) if you’d like. For those interested in a longer lasting, but still temporary, modification, get an intricately designed Henna tattoo by Mehndi by Soma, also free with admission.

"The inspiration behind this event started with Leonardo De Vinci's Vitruvian Man," says Lamont Craven, director of adult programming at the Science Center. "I love how it combined science, math and art."

For braver or more experienced tattoo enthusiasts, artists from Bloomfield studio Torch and Dagger will offer on-site permanent tattoos for an additional charge. Staff from Hot Rod piercing and Steel City Bleed Black & Gold Tattoo Expo can answer any questions about the science behind body piercing and tattooing.

"Whether it's tattoos, henna or makeup, there is an chemistry in the ink, dye and cosmetics that needs to merge with the biology of our individual cells," says Craven. "I can geek out on the science all day." 

The Highmark SportsWorks center will also be open (and included with admission).
