For many cancer survivors, wigs can represent the hardships and isolation of treatment, says Stephanie Samolovitch, who founded Young Adult Survivors United in 2020.

But at the annual Wig Out gala, they’re transformed into a symbol of community, belonging and joy.

“On this night … survivors get a break from everyday worries to have fun as a community and feel the surrounding love,” Samolovitch said in a statement.

This year’s Wig Out gala will begin at 6 p.m. Friday at Rivers Casino Event Center on the North Shore. TJ the DJ will spin tunes, the Pittsburgh Samba Group will perform, and there will be a best wig contest, along with an auction, vendors and a buffet. Cancer patients, survivors and thrivers (someone who has turned their cancer experience into an opportunity for growth) are offered discounted tickets.

The event has sold out for the past two years in a smaller venue; last year’s event raised $64,000 for the group, which Samolovitch founded after being diagnosed with leukemia when she was 19. YASU is meant for young adult cancer survivors who are aged 18-39 when diagnosed.

While the organization is based in southwestern Pennsylvania, any young adult cancer patient and survivor in the U.S. is eligible for a free membership to access its services, which include virtual support groups, in-person support groups for those in the region, free respite trips, distribution days, counseling, social outings and events. YASU also provides financial assistance grants.

Samolovitch, who has a master’s degree in social work, facilitated her first young adult cancer support group in 2012, meant to provide not only support but also social outings and activities and financial assistance.

The first Wig Out gala was held three years ago in collaboration with Star Pittsburgh 100.7. The event this year will continue its tradition of a cancer survivor dedication, emceed by Kelly and Elista from Star Pittsburgh, which invites survivors onstage to be celebrated and applauded.

New this year is a VIP reception for sponsors, which begins at 5 p.m., with complimentary refreshments and a special dance performance by the owners of Nova Ballroom.

We’re thrilled by the success of Wig Out, which is full of so much fun and so much heart,” Samolovitch said.
