Ditch the Cereal: Here's Your New Favorite Breakfast Staple

Power up the blender — with smoothie bowls, breakfast is served in a jiffy.

This week notwithstanding, I retire my oatmeal and hot porridge breakfasts during the summer months. It is way too hot to start the day with a hot bowl of food.

So instead of those, I make smoothie bowls.

Consider smoothie bowls amped-up versions of the smoothies you would drink with a straw. More substantial, more texture. More FUN: Eating with a spoon presents a whole new level of possibilities with what you can add in for crunch and flavor.

I think smoothies and smoothie bowls are the best way to introduce anyone to healthy eating. First of all, they are absolutely beautiful — you can imagine how colorful they can be and the addition of toppings just put them over the … top. Guaranteed to blow up your Instagram feed. They are delicious, and depending on what you put in them, you can have two servings EACH of veggies and fruit for breakfast. Check those off you list — you’re almost DONE for the day.

Because smoothie bowls are more dense than typical smoothies, you will need a powerful blender to make them happen easily. Here is my basic recipe.

Smoothie Bowl

Serves 2

  • 2 cups frozen fruit (I used blackberries in this photo)
  • 1 cup oats
  • 1 frozen banana
  • Handful of greens
  • 4 dates
  • 1 tablespoon coconut oil
  • 1 tablespoon maple syrup or raw honey (optional)
  • 1 teaspoon ground flax seeds (optional)
  • 2 tablespoon nuts or nut butter of choice (optional)
  • ½ cups nut milk of choice

Toppings

  • Granola
  • Muesli
  • Hemp seeds
  • Chia seeds
  • Coconut flakes
  • Nuts
  • Fresh fruit

Place all ingredients in a blender and blend until smooth. Top with your favorite toppings.
