Coast to Coast: Mark Kehoe & Serena Hsieh

June 2, 2018

When Mark Met Serena:
Mark Kehoe and Serena Hsieh didn’t meet until near the end of their first year attending law school at Cornell University in 2015. Although they had a budding romance, they soon had to part ways for their summer internships at opposite ends of the country — Serena’s in Seattle and Mark’s in New Jersey. But they kept in touch, becoming close friends, which ultimately led to them building a strong relationship.

She Said Yes.
Before Mark got down on one knee, he considered what Serena wanted in the proposal. “Probably like most people, I overthought it initially,” Mark says. “But Serena would mention to me things she had wanted, so I tried to incorporate those.”

One of those things was having her family be a part of the event, so Mark made sure Serena’s mother was able to make the trip to New York City, where the couple now lives, from Pennsylvania and her brother from San Francisco.

Mark works near Central Park and would sneak out during the day to scout the perfect location. He chose the iconic Bow Bridge.

After Mark popped the question, he apologized to Serena that her family couldn’t be there, and then, they came out of the wooded area around the bridge.
“I burst into tears,” says Serena.

The Big Day.
Serena lived in Pittsburgh during middle school, but the couple chose the location for a destination wedding because it was an easy drive for both of their families — Serena’s parents live in Millerstown, Pa., and Mark’s live in New Jersey. They planned their entire wedding at the Carnegie Museum of Art remotely — but the two agree the day went off without a hitch.

The day was filled with surprises, including a flash mob planned by Serena and their siblings. She also coordinated a speech from Mark’s best friend, who was terrified of public speaking. Even though Mark’s friend only spoke for about a minute, it was a huge surprise for the groom. The couple incorporated Serena’s Chinese heritage in the wedding favors — chopsticks.

“Our wedding day was probably one of the most fun days,” says Mark.

Happily Ever After.
Following their wedding, Serena and Mark took a “minimoon” to Belize and took a longer trip later in the summer to Kenya and Tanzania. Serena, 31, and Mark, 30, both work as corporate lawyers in New York City.
