Whether you live within the 412 — or even within the 724 or the 814 — April 12 is a special day for Pittsburghers everywhere.
Dubbed 412 Day, April 12 brings a wide range of Pittsburgh-themed activities and events to the city, all of which are aimed at celebrating the stories, people and communities that make up the 412, which is the common area code for the greater Pittsburgh region. Below is a sampling of six festivities happening locally, but be sure to keep an eye out for any additional events happening around the city.
412 Fest | Bakery Square
Visitors to Bakery Square can enjoy local pop-up vendors, themed activities and special, Pittsburgh-centric appearances; in previous years, a few famed mascots dropped by, and event organizers say the Pirate Parrot and its friends will be roaming the festival from noon to 1 p.m. A Pittsburgh-themed vendor market featuring handmade gifts and themed merchandise will take over Bakery Square Boulevard while Ya Jagoff will be hosting a game of Musical Parking Chairs in the courtyard from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m., and a strawberry Jell-O pretzel pie eating contest from 2 to 3 p.m.
Bakery Square’s festival will also feature flash tattoos with Taylor, an artist from Duck Duck Tattoo.
$4.12 Drafts | Allegheny City Brewing
The North Side brewery is keeping its annual tradition of holding a $4.12 draft special on April 12 to commemorate 412 Day. All ACB draft beers will be $4.12 plus tax at the company’s new taproom on East Ohio Street on the North Side.
412 Day Celebration | Southern Tier Brewing Co.
After grabbing a discounted draft at Allegheny City Brewing, you can swing by Southern Tier on the North Shore for the brewery’s own Pittsburgh party. In the taproom, vendors will be selling their city-centric wares, ranging from pierogi-themed earrings to Pittsburgh-themed flash tattoos.
412 Spirit Day | Eastside Bond Plaza
From 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Spirit Street in East Liberty will be alive with a celebration of all things 412. Featuring live entertainment and local food and retail vendors, the party will be “reminding everyone what the 412 is all about,” according to the event website.
Treasures in the Archives | Heinz History Center
From 2 to 3:30 p.m. the Heinz History Center will offer a peek into the stories hidden in “Pittsburgh’s attic” during the Treasures in the Archives event. The annual program will dive into four Pittsburgh-based and lesser known topics chosen by the museum’s archivists, including the lessons and legacy of Dr. Violette Eash; a look at the Storagram, the in-house magazine of Kaufmann’s Department Store; a tour of Pittsburgh’s Jewish suburbs in their postwar heyday; and an exploration into the Pittsburgh Bureau of Fire records. Admission is free but prior registration is required.
Steel City Con | Monroeville Convention Center
While not strictly a 412 Day event, Pittsburgh’s annual comic book and pop culture convention is happening at the Monroeville Convention Center from April 10 through April 12. From “Star Trek’s” William Shatner to Doug Bradley of “Hellraiser” fame, the convention will host a range of famous faces available for meet-and-greets, Q&A sessions or autographs.
