Carnegie Mellon Alumni Own the Tonys

An astounding five CMU School of Drama grads took home hardware at the Tony Awards at Radio City Music Hall last night.

Carnegie Mellon University’s School of Drama has been getting considerable attention lately as a hotbed for Hollywood talent, including Zachary Quinto (Dr. Spock in the rebooted Star Trek) and Matthew Bomer (“White Collar,” Magic Mike), but the school has truly become a powerhouse on Broadway.

A whopping five CMU alumni took home Tony Awards last night — including 1991 grad and East Liberty native Billy Porter, who won Best Performance in a Leading Role in a Musical for Kinky Boots, and 2006 grad Patina Miller, who won Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role in a Musical for Pippin.

The Tony honors come just two weeks after The Hollywood Reporter named CMU the No. 4 drama school in the world. Bravo!

• California comes to Pittsburgh tonight as pop rockers Local Natives take the floor at Stage AE at 7 p.m.
