Graphic Novel ‘Epilectra’ Turns Disabilities into Superabilities
Published in 2024 by Mt. Lebanon native Sue Seserman, the graphic novel features characters who overcome obstacles to fight villains — and learn to take pride in who they are.
Eden Rivers is a normal teacher living in New York City and her brother Logan is an electrical engineer.
A lightning strike leaves them both in the hospital — Eden now suffers from seizures and Logan is paralyzed from the waist down. But soon they realize Eden can shoot lightning from her fingertips and Logan’s brain has reached genius level.
The graphic novel “Epilectra”, created and written by Mt. Lebanon native Sue Seserman and illustrated by former Disney artist Jayme Brown, is all about transforming disabilities into super-abilities. Through three stories, Eden discovers more about herself and what she can do and helps others do the same — while fighting some villains and saving New York City in the meantime.
Seserman says the novel reflects her own battles and triumphs living with epilepsy since 2013 and Type 1 diabetes since 1993.
“My hope for the Epilectra series is that it provides an ‘Aha’ moment for its readers whether they’re disabled or not,” said Seserman in a press release. “It will help individuals understand that they’re capable of accomplishing great things, capable of reaching their dreams — even if that means taking a creative route to get there or asking for help along the way.”
In her dedication to the book, she expresses regret that no matter how hard she tries there will “always be someone with a disability who doubts themselves” but she has hope because attitudes can change.
“Sometimes they just need a nudge from a superhero who gets ‘it’ to start the ball rolling,” she writes.
“Epilectra Book” 1 was published earlier in 2024 by Dorrance Publishing, headquartered in Pittsburgh, and is available on Amazon. “Epilectra” Book 2 is expected to be released in 2025.
