The public will get another chance to tour the new $1.7 billion terminal at Pittsburgh International Airport before it officially opens sometime this fall.
A Community Open House — open to all ages — has been scheduled from noon to 7 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 11. Registration is required so visitors can select time slots, and sign-ups will open next week, according to Blue Sky News.
During this event, visitors will be able to explore all aspects of the new terminal at their own pace and participate in a number of interactive activities that will be offered by some of the airport’s community partners, like the Children’s Museum of Pittsburgh, Kamin Science Center, Tree Pittsburgh and the xBridge program, a tech innovation center located at PIT.
The open house will follow a “public trial” on Sept 20, in which 2,000 to 2,500 volunteers will test all aspects of the airport. More than 18,000 expressed interest in being guinea pigs, and the list will be narrowed to make sure all types of air passengers — families, seniors, leisure and business travelers, those with disabilities, those without smartphones, etc. — will be represented. Sign-ups for that were held in July.
A gala for partners and organizations involved in the project also is scheduled on Oct. 3 at the new terminal to celebrate. The state-of-the-art terminal replaces the current landside terminal that opened 33 years ago and connects directly to the airside terminal, eliminating the half-mile tram. No opening date has been announced.
