A New Kind of Summer at Slippery Rock University

The university will hold an environmental camp at the end of June.

Canoeing, hiking and roasting marshmallows are just a few of the things that come to mind when one hears the term “summer camp.” This year at Slippery Rock University, summer camp instead will be synonymous with discussions about water and air quality, acid mine-drainage mitigation and sustainable food.

The "SRU Healthy Planet, Healthy People Environmental Summer Camp and Community Project Incubator” will be held from June 20-24 for area high school students and teachers. Hosted by the university's Office of Sustainability, the five-day, four-night camp aims to engage its campers in lessons and outdoor activities centered around environmental topics and community projects.

"The ultimate goal of this project is to initiate and support environmental education and steward community projects across the region," says Paul Scanlon, SRU director of sustainability.

"Students will be taking part in a number of outdoor 'adventures,' as well as learning from acclaimed environmental educators about the rare geographic and geologic features of the Pennsylvania state parks."

The registration fee for students is $100, which covers room, board and activity fees. More information can be found here.
