Pittsburgh's Hottest Neighborhoods for Renters

Find out where the top neighborhoods for rentals in Pittsburgh are right now.

Using a combination of data gleaned from hundreds of apartment listings, the rental website Zumper came up with a list of the 20 most popular Pittsburgh neighborhoods for renters.

At the top of the list is Marshall-Shadeland, which gets props for a combination of “cheaper, available housing” that is “conveniently located for painless commutes.”

Brighton Heights was No. 2 because it offers shops, community events, and nearby hiking trails, playgrounds and sports courts. Packed with students and single professionals looking for a home close to their work, Oakland finished at No. 3. Rounding out the top five are Knoxville, whose renters are drawn to “rows of beautiful Victorian-styled homes,” and Shadyside, with its “affluent, well-kept neighborhoods.”

#Celebration: Vanka's Millvale Murals

Croatian artist Maxo Vanka called the murals he painted on the walls of St. Nicholas Croatian Catholic Church his “gift to America.” The murals, which combine religious iconography with commentary on social justice and the horrors of war, are worthy of museum display — that they’re sitting on the walls of a Millvale church is remarkable. A painstaking restoration process has been underway since 2009. Now, in honor of the 75th anniversary of the murals’ completion and the 25th anniversary of the Society to Preserve the Millvale Murals of Maxo Vanka (vankamurals.org), a yearlong series of celebrations begins on March 4 with the third annual “Cocktails and Conservation” event, hosted by filmmaker and Pittsburgh Magazine columnist Rick Sebak. That evening also will include the reveal of dramatic, permanent lighting on four of the most striking murals. A lecture series discussing Vanka’s work is set for later this year.
