There were violins, flowers, family — and yes — tears. On Sunday, Pittsburgh Mayor Bill Peduto presided over a group wedding ceremony for 19 same-sex couples, the first major ceremony since a federal judge declared Pennsylvania's ban on same-sex marriage unconstitutional on May 20. The emotional event coincided with the city’s annual PrideFest parade.
Many of the couples had been waiting a very long time for this day.
"We met in 1981 in college, and we fell in love," Penn Hills resident Nancy Janda told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. "Honestly, I went to college looking for the right guy, and I found her. It was the surprise of my life."
Outside the City-County chambers, a party awaited.
