Pittsburgh’s Popular Concert Series Returns
From jazz and fusion to rock ‘n roll, the city is bringing the sounds of summer.
Pittsburgh’s parks are alive with the sound of music.
City officials announced the return of the annual summer concert series, which will feature 22 free musical events throughout Pittsburgh’s parks. This year’s lineup includes a patriotic revue from River City Brass on June 28, plus local jazz and rock favorites all season long.
On Saturdays from June 6 through July 25, “Stars at Riverview” spotlights jazz and fusion on the stage at Riverview Park in Observatory Hill, featuring Roger Barbour Music, Chantal Joseph and Fermented Beats. Concert-goers are encouraged to bring a lawn chair or blanket, with concerts followed by a showing of a film each Saturday in June and July as part of the city’s annual Cinema in the Park series. There will also be rotating food trucks on site.
“Bach, Beethoven, and Brunch” will continue to showcase classical melodies in the gardens of Mellon Park on Sundays from June 21 through July 26. Attendees can bring a picnic basket and vie for a prize in the weekly “Best Brunch” competition during intermission, or purchase beverage and food options from local vendors. Performers include the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra and the Three Rivers Young Peoples Orchestra.
Pittsburgh’s finest jazz musicians return to the Highland Park lawn Sunday afternoons in August for the ever-popular “Reservoir of Jazz” series. Grab a bite to eat and a seat on the lawn as long-time Riverview staple Lee Robinson & ISKA swings over to the reservoir stage, appearing along with a full lineup of series newcomers this season. Following the concerts, attendees can enjoy Summer Soul Line Dancing sessions at the fountain.
“Jam at Grandview” is back on Saturday evenings in August, where visitors can enjoy music, brews and one of the City’s best views. Local bands, such as crowd favorite SamJAMwich and first-timer Brahctopus, will once again blend genres including rock, psychedelic, and funk from the Grandview Park Bandstand.
“The Summer Concert Series celebrates local artists in parks across the city, and we encourage everyone to come out and experience the best of Pittsburgh this summer,” says Lisa McGraw, Pittsburgh Market Retail Executive at Citizens, which sponsors the series.
